TAKE TO TASK: A weekly look at what's not working in your neighborhood

Garbage trucks trash neighborhood drain?

A broken sewer cover at Laurel Ridge Drive and Shetland Drive near Decatur has taken a beating over the years from garbage trucks turning the corner, neighborhood residents say.

Published on: 06/08/06

Some folks in the Laurel Ridge neighborhood think the county could save some money by simply asking their garbage truck drivers to stop running over and crushing concrete culverts.

Linda Grivas sent Take to Task a photo of the crunched-up drain in her yard at Laurel Ridge and Shetland drives, near North DeKalb Mall.

Dan Magee, Laurel Ridge Civic Association president, estimates the same cover has been smashed by county trash trucks four times in the past two years. And he says the same thing has happened more than once just down the street at Shetland and Laurel Hill drives. The problem is that the drivers cut the corner when making right turns, Magee said.

After Take to Task passed on their concerns to county government, roads and drainage chief Carl Glover visited the neighborhood himself. He said the broken cover at Shetland and Laurel Hill merits immediate repair as a "priority A1" problem, and he said the same work crew would repair the cover at the Grivas house on the same trip.

Take to Task has banged a curb or two making a speedy right turn and hates to be critical, but perhaps a word to the truck drivers is in order?

Take to Task believes the guys on the back of the truck would appreciate fewer bumps, too.
