DeKalb Fix It

If you've got a problem that the county should fix (roadway, water, sewer, etc.), please email the details to: dekalbfixit@ajc.com; please include a daytime phone number.

The AJC has recently started a feature where residents email/write/call in problems in DeKalb that are not being addressed by the relevant county department (potholes, bushes overgrowing sidewalks & paths, unkempt yards etc.). The paper then assigns a writer to call and pester the relevant department head to fix the aforementioned problem. The paper then writes about how fast/slow the problem is resolved. So far, problems that residents had been told would take weeks/months before the county "had time" to review have been getting resolved in a few days.

Traffic Calming Plan for N. Superior

A resident of N. Superior Avenue, John Maynard, has received an initial plan from the county for placing various "traffic calming" devices on N. Superior between N. Decatur Road and Desmond Drive. This is only a preliminary plan and can be modified if it is ratified by a petition drive of the affected residents. The county lists 157 homes as being in the affected area.

Copies of the plan should be distributed in the next week or so to residents of N. Superior. If they can be scanned in, we will post copies to our website. At our next meeting, the CHCA board will plan a street/neighborhood wide meeting to occur as soon as possible to facilitate discussion of this issue between residents of N. Superior.

What the DeKalb County Commissioners do?
The Board of Commissioners is comprised of one Commissioner for each of the county's five Districts and two Super Districts. It sets policy and appropriate funding for the county operations. Emory University Launches Interactive Web Site To Promote Community Dialogue

Emory University has launched a new, interactive Web site to generate public dialogue and involvement in the Clifton Community Partnership, a collaboration between Emory University, Emory Healthcare, and the businesses, organizations and neighbors who are part of the community.

Emory officials said the goal of the Clifton Community Partnership (CCP) is to create a vibrant economic, environmental and social community in which all can thrive.

The CCP Web site (http//www.cliftoncommunitypartnership.org/) provides a framework for all stakeholders to share ideas and work together to improve the quality of life in the area. The interactive Web site joins a new monthly newsletter and ongoing public forums as ways Emory is encouraging community participation. "In our strategic plans, Emory has made a major commitment to develop and nurture a healthy living-learning-working community," says Michael Mandl, Emory's executive vice president for finance and administration. "Emory is willing to do its part and to lend our leadership resources to help create a clear vision, strong consensus and commitments from other stakeholders."

The CCP focuses on issues related to sustainability of place, including
* Enhancing accessibility with wider sidewalks and beautiful landscape design.
* Transforming Clifton and North Decatur Roads to increase pedestrian presence while reducing vehicular speed and maintaining urban design standards to improve the overall look and feel of the community.
* Targeting a few venues for small-scale, mixed-use development of housing, retail and entertainment "activity centers" adjacent to campus.
* Expanding the concept of transportation by providing more opportunities for employees to commute into the Clifton Community other than by single-occupancy vehicles.

Emory, which just this week was recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as one of the "Best Workplaces for Commuters," continues to expand its alternative transportation programs. Working with the other employer/members of the Clifton Corridor Transportation Management Association, shuttle service to Decatur was greatly enhanced this spring, and the group's first major park and ride will open at North DeKalb Mall on June 19. By September, expanded shuttle routes will connect the Clifton community with other neighborhood hubs. The shuttles serve employees, students and neighbors -- all for free.

Door-to-Door Crime Warning

From: Medlock Area Neighborhood Association
Subject: Suspicious occurrence in the neighborhood
This security concern was passed on by a neighbor and I wanted to send it out since it was recent and these folks may be "around" over the next few day. Thanks for sending information such as this in....it is helpful for us all to be mindful!!

I live on Harrington Drive and a young man knocked on my door this evening claiming to be from a marketing company called First Line that works for ADT (my security system provider.) He said they are doing upgrades in the area and asked if I was having any problems. He was on foot and would not give me his name or a business card. I called ADT and they said they had not authorized any person to do this sort of work. I called the police and they are familiar with a group of young men doing this and when they see them always ask them to leave the area. The description of the man who came to my house is below. If you see this person or another person potentially doing this sort of thing, please make note of which way he or she is headed and call the police immediately.

Caucasian
Hair light brown, curly, short
Tall and thin
Young (early 20s)

This evening he was wearing a white polo shirt with a red First Line marketing logo (looks like a red X) on the collar, an ADT badge on one sleeve, and a Honeywell logo on the other. He had an id badge clipped to one sleeve that was turned so I couldn't see his name. He was wearing gray slacks or shorts and was on foot. He was carrying a clipboard with a picture of a security system keypad on the back.
Please call 911 if you have any questions.
